How To Find Your Calling

At some point in time we all ask the question, “What am I supposed to do in life?” Graduates often wonder about this, but it's not just young people who ask. All age groups at different stages of life ponder this.

God created us for a purpose and He has a purpose for our lives. “Who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was granted to us in Christ Jesus from all eternity.” (2 Timothy 1:9, NASB.)

We refer to this as a calling. God has called each of us to do or be a specific thing. But it's not like God sends an angel to tell us what it is. How do we know what our calling is? There isn't a magic formula to finding out your purpose in life. First of all pray and ask for guidance. Then go through the following steps to help figure it out further.

~ Our Talents
Many times God uses what we're good at for His purpose. There are many examples of this in the Bible. Martha was a good cook and hospitable. Jesus loved staying at her family's house. Apollos could debate and make a speech and he led many people to Christ. Each of our talents has a place in God's kingdom, even if it's as simple as cooking a meal. What are you good at?

~ Our Passions
What fires you up? If you don't know, ask a family member or close friend what topic you go on and on about. Pay attention to what works you up. If starving children in Africa, unsaved people, struggling moms, or whatever it is stirs you, investigate how you could help them. Helping those in need doesn't just refer to the poor. It can be a hurting friend, an overwhelmed family member, or discouraged church member. “In everything I showed you that by working hard in this way you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35, NASB.)

~ Our Interests
What grabs your attention? Law enforcement? Medicine? Preaching? If it attracts you, consider doing it full-time. But remember, it doesn't have to be something fancy. Sometimes it's moms, secretaries, or police officers who make a difference. David was a shepherd when he took down Goliath. Mary was an ordinary girl when she was chosen to bear the Messiah. Remember, you don't need to be in a pulpit to be doing stuff for God.

As you go through this process continually talk to God and ask Him what He wants you to do. Talking to a parent, pastor, or mentor can also help. God has a special calling for each of us and it's not impossible to figure out what it is.
