Persuasion (1995) - Movie Review

Be aware that there is a significant difference between the reviews and recommendations on this blog. Just because I review a book, TV show, or movie does not mean I recommend it. I am simply analyzing the work and giving my honest opinion of it, as well as providing key points such as the plot summary, age appropriateness (if the reader should choose to read or watch it), and anything else that's noteworthy.
While Mr. Darcy is the most well-known Jane Austen hero, Captain Wentworth from Persuasion is a close second. And the 1995 Persuasion movie, starring Amanda Root and CiarĂ¡n Hinds, has been hailed as the most accurate interpretation of the novel. Today I will be reviewing this beloved movie.

Plot Summary

Eight years ago, Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth were lovers before Anne's friend persuaded her to turn down his proposal because he wasn't rich enough. Now he returns from the Napoleonic War a rich sea captain, while her family is struggling financially. Anne is thrust into his company again but she's determined to keep her love for him under wraps. But as they are continually in each other's company, she begins to wonder if there could be a second chance for her with Fredrick. And even if there was, would he be willing to take it?

Pros and Cons

There are a few cuss words. At one point a young woman jumps off a high wall so a man can catch her, but she ends up hitting the concrete. She lives, but the scene may frighten some children. Also, a young child breaks his arm and his parents freak out.

Personal Thoughts

I know Pride and Prejudice is the most beloved Jane Austen story, but Persuasion is equally captivating. The movie captures the spirit of the book perfectly. Anne and Captain Wentworth's romance is a second-chance slow-burn that culminates in the best love letter written in literary history. For those looking for an accurate adaptation of the novel, this is it.

Notes

Best for tweens and older.
