For some reason, finding Easter books can be difficult. But reading books centered around the Easter story is a great way to prepare your heart for the coming holiday. Below are books for various ages and maturity levels so the whole family can have something to read aloud.
~ The Easter Story – retold and illustrated by Carol Heyer
This books recounts in simple language the biblical Easter story, beginning with Palm Sunday and ending with the empty tomb. Great for young children especially.
~ The Glorious Impossible – Madeleine L'Engle, illustrated with frescoes by Giotto
This book goes through the life of Jesus and beyond. Starting with Gabriel's visit to Mary, the author includes significant events in Jesus' life, including the wedding feast at Cana, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and Pentecost. Frescoes painted by the Italian artist Giotto adorn almost every other page.
~ Titus: A Comrade of the Cross – Florence Morse Kingsley
This Lamplighter book follows the story of Titus and his brother Stephen as they find their way in life. Titus chose to become a thief and rebel like their father. Stephen is drawn to the new Teacher, Jesus of Nazareth. As tensions rise between the Jews and the Romans, each boy finds himself on different sides of the conflict and irrevocably intertwined with the Master.
~ Vinegar Boy – Alberta Hawse
Vinegar Boy earned his name from his job. He carries the vinegar to crucifixions for the criminals. Orphaned and shunned by everyone except his friend Nicholas, he decides to ask Jesus to take away the ugly birthmark on his face, thinking he can be adopted once it's removed. But the very day he goes to ask, Jesus is crucified. Crushed, Vinegar Boy is pulled into the dramatic events of the day and finds himself serving the Savior instead of the other way around.
~ Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die – John Piper
We generally know the main reason why Jesus died: to pay for our sins so we can be with God. But His death accomplished so much more. In this book John Piper explores the many reasons why Jesus died and how that affects us today.
